2000-11-05 in Neideresach, Germany Sunday was the best bike ride of our lives. (I hope I can say that once a week!). We woke up to find that the weather had cleared up and that all our laundry was done (did I mention that we bought a tent and are supposed to be roughing it? this is Raucher camping!) Well, blue skies and an open road, time to test out our new gear. We drove to Switzerland, about half an hour from Niedereshach and kept going. We made it to Zurich for lunch at the train station: two sausages and a cup of coffee (and you thought we couldnt rough it). We then headed for Italy via the Alps, after getting past the Swiss Sunday drivers (apparently speeding in Switzerland is more expensive than anywhere else on the planet with fines running into hundreds of Swiss francs) we saw snow capped peaks, valleys and finally snow on the roads, we were well impressed. We kept going until we reached Milan at about seven PM without refuelling (god bless Touratech tanks). We stayed in the CBD of Milan, which was not a good idea as everything was shut. Robert was on usual form, being paranoid about theft, so even after finding a 24 hour lockup garage, he still made me take off ALL the luggage. Has anyone ever tried checking into a hotel with 4 Aluminium boxes, 2 duffell bags, 2 tanks bags and two helmets for just ONE night? The best part of course was putting it all back on the following morning in the pouring rain. Now that sucks.
