2001-09-06 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia A fantastic surprise From Trang I travelled down highway 4 to the Malaysian border and crossed without incident. There is one road from the Thai-Malaysian border all the way to Singapore, more a super-highway than a road according to locals. Everyone will tell you this because in Malaysia they really pride themselves on the biggest and the best. As luck would have it when I was in Cochin, South India I made friends with a really crazy Israeli named Yuval, he told me to look up his South African friend when visiting Malaysia as this friend, Cameron, lives in KL. Cameron, being a true Capetonian graciously offered me accommodation (with parking!!) in return for some smuggled green papaya and sticky rice from Thailand; it was a gambit I couldnt refuse. Camerons apartment is in Petaling Jaya a suburb of KL with fantastic highway access into the heart of KL in minutes. In fact the entire city of KL has the most incredible highway network I have ever seen, with signposts in English to boot! Even at rush hour traffic moves along at 80 km/h and this is at the time they are hosting the SEA Games. Quite remarkable.
My time in KL was spent gadget shopping, new digital camera, laptop etc and then the evenings were occupied by going into China Towns backstreets and eating the local specialty. See the picture below for how to eat Chinese Chilli Frog Porridge, yummy. There is not much else to do in KL but shop and eat, which is fine by me. I did manage to see the old jail in the heart of KL which has a lovely sign on the wall, very friendly indeed (see pic). Of course there are the twin towers, and being a dutiful tourist I snapped a pic of those too.
Going back to my comment of Malaysians liking everything bigger and better, everywhere you turn there is a sign proclaiming things like; The biggest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere, the largest computer digital wall mural in the world, the oldest jungle in the world (fair enough) and the tallest buildings in the world. No matter how hard I looked there was no sign for the cheapest anything so after 4 days in KL it was time to leave.
I am now in Cherating on the East Coast and will be making my way tomorrow to the Perenthian Islands for more scuba diving; I have a waterproof camera now so some interesting pictures should be in the next story!
